My Students

I am teaching AP Literature and Composition and Speech and Debate to high school students. These kids have an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty by attending college if they receive proper education and training to be successful in college and develop strong relationships with a caring, supportive adult.

I teach at a high-poverty urban school in East Tulsa and many of these students are children of trauma.

Research shows that children of trauma suffer cognitive and behavioral development that are frequently never resolved. Research also shows that creating a "homey" learning environment is inviting and calming especially for children of trauma. Providing an environment where the students feel safe to learn and grow is instrumental in providing them with the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.

My Project

Students will be reading different books with a diverse ethnicity to apply their analytical skills. The books include Their Eyes Were Watching God, Bless Me Ultima, and Joy Luck Club.

Students will be able to read a book and analyze it by independently practicing skills they have been learning all year.

They will read and analyze independently and then bring what they have learned to their small group to explore further. Once completed they will create a thematic poster to teach other students about the book so they, too, can benefit from the details of the book. This helps to prepare them for the AP Literature exam.
