This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fourth grade class in the South Bronx section of New York City. The school is located in an impoverished neighborhood. Students live in overcrowded apartments or in homeless shelters. Our school is low-performing. We do not have money in the budget to purchase book shelves, though my classroom is in desperate need of them to house the new and updated books we received from Mayor Bloomberg.
Presently the books are in boxes and baskets situated on the floor and under tables, and my students are not able to easily access them. My 22 students are required to select books for their independent reading work period and research report assignments. My students' only access to the books is at school. If we had bookshelves in the classroom, we could categorize the books and give the students a chance to browse through them easily, without rummaging through boxes on the floor. Also, as our classroom is small, the bookshelves will have the added benefit of freeing up desperately needed space for desks and chairs. Any help is appreciated.
