Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a first grade classroom at a high needs low-income public school. Most of the students come from low-income homes and all of them receive free meals. The students range in age from 6-7 years old and our class is made up of a diverse group of learners that come from different cultures and countries. Many of the students are English Language Learners (ELL) and some students have disabilities while others are typically developing.
Despite the challenges many of the students face daily they come to school each day ready to learn and with a positive attitude.
They are curious, hard-working, imaginative, kind, and excited about learning. Watching their growth and enthusiasm for learning is truly inspiring. We purchase many of the materials ourselves so any donations to help support their learning are greatly appreciated.
My Project
My classroom is filled with 23 young readers. One of their favorite things to do during the day is to sit and read a book. I am working to create a reading nook where students can sit and have easy access to qualitative literature. While the classroom library has many great books it is lacking a book shelf to organize the books in a way that is easily accessible for a first grader. A book case display stand would change that by allowing me to store essential reading materials at eye level for my students. Additionally, the book case I selected is a mobile shelf that can easily be moved around the room if needed.
