My Students
My students are hard working and very energetic. They are creative and love to read! We are a year round school and I loop with my class which means I get to work with them for two years. Our school is Title I with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack.
"It's okay to be different" has been a positive motto for our class this year! We are very lucky to be in a culturally rich classroom where we can learn about diversity. Over half of my students are receiving services for special education and ESL. We spend a lot of time building our community and appreciating each other's differences.
My Project
When taking a look at my classroom library I have a lot of diverse picture books. However the chapter books, early reader, and book series books only feature main characters that are white boys and white girls.
I need book series books that reflect the rich diversity in the classroom that have main characters with both boys and girls of color.
The books that I have requested in this projects are great beginner chapter books for the first and second grade reader. And, best of all they feature main characters that are from diverse backgrounds. My students are acquiring a love for reading and will be very thrilled to have books in which they can see themselves.
