Book Room Books--Help Our Students Read at School and Home

My students need leveled books that they can read in class and at home, in order to grow as readers, including Rigby PM readers, Magic Tree House, & National Geographic.

My Students

"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift" (Kate DiCamillo) When children read engaging, “just right” books, it feels like they've been given a wonderful present. When they can then read to someone at home, the gift keeps giving!

Our school is a tight-knit community of learners, educators, and supportive families in a small mountain town in Northern CA.

Our kindergarten through fifth-grade students love to learn, yet are all at a wide range of places in their development as readers. For this reason, we try to provide a variety of leveled "just right" texts that students can read at school with support, and then take home to read with their families, which helps them continue to build fluency and confidence as readers. We believe in having a shared resource that all staff can access, to support our students' learning. We also work hard to build home-school connections by sending these texts home for students to share with their families. Lastly, we feel strongly about helping children to become responsible stewards of these books, so they are invested and understand the value of our learning tools. As a Reading Specialist and parent of a growing kindergarten reader, I understand the difference these books make!

My Project

Our school is fortunate to have a a fabulous shared literacy resource: a book room of leveled texts to use for guided reading and reader's workshop! We need more books to create Teachers check out a set of six books, of the same title, to use in small group instruction. These books are carefully leveled to meet the needs of readers, as they grow, and are designed to be read in an instructional period of 20-30 minutes. Students read these books with support as needed, in the classroom, and then take them home to read again. Having a shared reading experience with peers allows students to more deeply understand a text, and repeated readings help build fluency, comprehension, and confidence. Most importantly, these books are carefully selected for students at a particular point in their development. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach; these books enable us to differentiate our instruction to meet the needs of students where they are now, in order to help them continue to grow.

Sadly, we currently have too few copies of some books, so teachers do not have a full set to use with their students.

While it is possible, yet not ideal, for students to share a text at school, this prevents both children from being able to bring the book home to practice reading it that night. My hope is to be able to replace the missing and/or damaged books from our shared sets, so we will have enough for all students to participate fully in their literacy learning experiences.
