Book Nook: STEM Style

Help me give my students pillows and rugs to create a cozy, comfortable reading nook.

My Project

We service roughly 450 students as a Title I school. Most of our students come from single-parent homes where access to books is limited. The library provides a space for our students to choose and be exposed to all types of books and activities that they would otherwise lack at home. It is heartwarming when the kindergartners get so excited about a book they have found and want to read. We are also a STEAM academy and incorporate STEAM activities with literacy for all ages by providing Makerspaces and Centers in the Library. We strive to keep up with the newest ways to engage students with 21st-century concepts to help them prepare for the future. I want to create a reading nook to increase interest in STEM concepts and careers and encourage reading. The nook will provide a dedicated space for students to spend time reading books about STEM concepts and careers.

Interest and exposure to STEM and STEM careers is the first step in inspiring students to STEM opportunities.

Having a ‘cute and comfy’ reading nook with a specific focus on STEM books will gain the interest of our students, especially minorities and our female population. In addition, by rotating books to coordinate with the current STEM concept being taught, students gain a broader perspective of how the concept relates to real world careers and people. Providing a dedicated and comfortable reading area will influence students to read and encourage them to spend more time reading and to read more often.

I've got a tent and ample books dedicated to STEM concepts. Now, I just need to make it cozy.
