Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I (low-income) school in East Oakland. The majority of our students are immigrant families from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the U.S. They are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

COVID-19 has them learning from home in a zip code with the highest rate of infection in the county, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment or been directly affected by COVID-19.

My Project

Distance learning shouldn't just be worksheets, Zoom meetings, and Google docs. To get our students away from screens and give them an outlet to express themselves as they face drastic life changes due to the Covid-19, I am requesting the materials to give each student in the 6th grade backpacks filled with bookmaking materials.

We plan to deliver backpacks full of bookmaking and art supplies to all 6th grade students at our school so they can engage in a distance learning accordion book-making project documenting their experiences during the pandemic.

We plan to incorporate art therapy activities as well as activities from Lynda Barry's "Making Comics" into our books. We hope that the art activities made possible by these materials will help students explore their emotions, gain personal insight, and develop both their coping skills and their creativity.
