My Students

Second graders are the best! They are creative, curious, and funny. There is never a dull moment with them. In addition to content, they are learning when to listen and when to be social, how to collaborate and cooperate, and they are learning how to be independent, motivated learners. This is a lot! As a teacher, it is my job to make sure students are enjoying learning so that they continue to love school and become lifelong learners. One way that I can do this is by creating an environment that is comfortable, yet conducive to learning. The materials that I am requesting will help my students remain engaged and motivated learners, while providing lots of practice for the skills I am teaching.

The right book can set the whole tone for a lesson, whether it is a mentor text for a content area, to teach a social skill, or just read for the pure love of reading!

My goal is to have my students engaged and in love with reading and learning each day as they enter my classroom. Great books provide students with text that will engage and motivate them to become lifelong readers and learners!

My Project

Chris Van Allsburg books are amazing selections to help students understand many reading strategies, such as questioning, predicting, and inferring. They are gorgeous and entertaining, which makes them amazing to use to teach lessons as the students become fully engaged.

The other books that I chose will also be used for specific teaching moments in the classroom, but also read for enjoyment.

Eraser is a great story to teach that making mistakes is how we learn. Michael Garland's stories teach about loving a variety of books and stories.

I have learned that if you are reading amazing books to students, they want to read them, as well. They become curious, engaged, empathetic, and insightful through these books and lessons and discussions. The titles selected will help keep this momentum in my classroom and continue to build a love for books.
