This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 25 curious and eager-to-learn fifth graders. I have a diverse group of English Learners, students with special needs, and students in the Response to Intervention Program. All but one student in my class reads below a fifth grade level.

My students have the power to shine and thrive with innovative and engaging instructional activities.

I believe that all of my students have the potential to accomplish their personal goals this year. I set high expectations for my students, because I know that all of them can grow tremendously. I absolutely love to see the challenges that my students can overcome through hard work, diligence, and perseverance. With the use of read alouds and structured literacy lessons, I have observed students increase their reading levels by one to three grades.

My Project

My students come from various backgrounds and have different learning needs. Read alouds are imperative to their literacy success. They need to see a proficient reader model reading with expression and enthusiasm.

If my students had their own copies of Bud, Not Buddy during the daily read aloud, they would be able to utilize their reading strategies more effectively and "play that movie" in their mind.

Following along with a read aloud helps students connect written words to spoken language, which will aid in my students' comprehension tremendously. They will have the opportunity to develop their vocabulary and understanding of story elements.
