My students are born Americans but their heritage is of Latino background. I want them to know where they come from and who they are. Most of them can speak the language pretty well but most of them have never been exposed to real language as they do not have book to read or their parent cannot read themselves. I hope that with this book I will be able to open their mind to not only reading but their heritage.
My students are kids that their heritage is Latino.
Some of them are here as their parent came before them and brought them here, others were born here but no matter what their heritage is of Latino background. They know their language thought their parents but they do not have the facility to experience more than what they hear. They want to know who they where they come from and keep the spirit of their heritage alive. In our school the population is mostly African- American with a 15% of the student of Latino background. They come to me to learn more about their language and they are so hungry to learn but most of them give up fast as there is nothing to inspire them to continue on. I want them to be inspired by reading. They will read about them self and where they come from. I want them feel inspire to learn more by opening their eyes to reading and yes in their language so they can learn how to read and read in any other language they chose to read. Make a reader make a learner for life.
My student will use this book to be inspired to read more and learn more about their heritage. I hope that by reading this book and others, they will create a passion for reading as well to discover people form their own back ground and learn who they are. Reading will talk to them and make them think who they are and what they have done. Reading is one of the most important keys to open a child mind to other things. They want to learn, they want to do better but they do not know how. I hope that with this book, Como Agua Para Chocolate / Like Water for Chocolate, I will be the instrument that opens their eyes to reading and to the world. This experience in time will make a big change to their life. They will also learn about their culture, proper grammar and some of them will learn how to read too. They will learn new words that will expand their vocabulary make them more knowledge. They can also write about what they read using their new words. What else can be say about reading; reading is the key to imagination and imagination is the key to life.
Reading is life, reading is knowledge; lets create great future full of open minds, full of knowledge and forget what language it is.
When we learn we learn for life. Lets do that; make life time learn, life time readers
