Hola! Ciao! Namaste! Ni Hau! These are some of the greetings we hear every morning from our students during summer ELL camp in our school. As diverse as these words sound, they all have the same meaning to all of our students that come from multicultural backgrounds: Hello!
Young English Language Learners from our school district gather every summer to participate in a hands-on, fun-filled and academically enhanced program designed to promote English language acquisition and skills to succeed in English-mainstream classrooms.
Our ELL students come with unique stories about their lives that are shared in the classrooms, on the playground, and in the hallways. They communicate during play and learning in a social environment where a variety of activities facilitate English language development.
My Project
Books of different genres will benefit our English Language Learners in multiple ways during our summer program. By having access to a plethora of books, our students will be able to strengthen their reading comprehension skills and this, in turn, will help them better understand the content and context of subject areas such as Math, Science and Social Studies. Furthermore, books on a variety of topics will give our ELLs the opportunity to choose to read topics that are interesting and meaningful to them. Books will be placed in learning areas around the classroom, easily accessible to students and help reinforce language learning throughout the day.
By contributing to our classroom library, you will help create a language-rich classroom environment and a love of reading to our ELLs that can have a profound impact not only on their academic success but also on their social and emotional development.
Immersion in high quality and relevant literature on a daily basis will help them move forward academically and blossom to their full potential!
