Our students attend a small, rural school with an enrollment of 400 students in grades 9-12. Because funding is limited, our students have not had access to some of the resources in larger districts. Our students depend on resources in our school, and our collection of library books needs to be updated to provide resources to appeal to diverse interests. We are implementing independent reading time as a part of our English curriculum, and students need access to high interest books to foster a life-long love of reading.
My Project
In order for students to be successful throughout their education and future careers, they must be proficient readers. We have implemented independent reading as a part of our English classes. Library circulation rates are increasing monthly, and students are gaining excitement about reading for pleasure as they are allowed to select books of choice to read. Many students have asked about the possibility of having a book club discussion group in addition to reading promotions through the English classes. As a part of this DonorsChoose grant, we will provide copies of Wonder and A Wrinkle in Time for our book club. I will use these copies of the books with the book club members to foster an appreciation of literature and to engage them in critical thinking skills. Please help us encourage literacy and instill a lifelong love of reading by helping fund quality literature for our students. Students who participate in our book club will also be able to visit our "Starbooks Café" to read, relax, and enjoy cappuccino. We hope that the additional books will encourage students to read "a-latte."
