This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Resilient, positive, compassionate, and driven describe the scholars at my middle school. The obstacles the scholars have to overcome simply to make it to school would have many adults think of quitting and yet they succeed and thrive. The middle school is located in one of the poorest and most under-served neighborhoods in a large, rich city. They represent an array of abilities, beliefs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities. All of their differences unite them together in a beautiful way. The school has formed a strong community in which no scholar falls through the cracks and all have a chance at academic and social success.
My Project
The book clubs are the most popular clubs we have at school. We read a book, come together, eat banana bread and talk about books. The students love to argue about endings, talk about characters and what to read next.
I hear often that "kids today" do not like to read and our book clubs prove that wrong.
Students love to read and to talk about their reading. I have a long list of titles and students that want to join the various clubs at school. I can not keep up with their reading demands and that is a wonderful thing.
Students who read do better in school. They get better grades and it helps improve literacy in the academic classes. Reading stories also helps build empathy and understanding of others.
