Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Great books help inspire great writing, and while my students are writing novels during National Novel Writing Month (an epic, ambitious undertaking!), they will be book clubbing with these exciting titles. With our library CLOSED, we need these small group sets to build our creative community.

My seventh graders attend a public middle school in a big city.

With so many demands on their time, from school to friends to the lure of TV and video games, too often students don't make time for reading. For our upcoming novel writing month, they need to read great stories and have some good models to keep them writing their own novels. Some books are geared toward my English Language Learners who need illustrations to help make the story and the words come to life. Some are geared toward my gifted learners who have the stamina and enthusiasm to tackle a 500-page historical fiction set during the Holocaust. Some are for those reluctant readers who just don't get what the big deal is. All of them are designed to be read in "book clubs" to help create a community of readers and novel writers.

My Project

These books cover a range of characters and worlds many students have never imagined. From a girl with Cerebral Palsy trying to make her voice heard, to brothers struggling with the lure of gangs, to a girl whose family faces intense scrutiny after 9/11, these characters will help my students enter a whole new world that will help inspire and enrich their love of reading, and give them untold inspiration for their own novels. When they feel stuck during National Novel Writing Month, they can analyze and discuss what the authors of these books did to keep the pages exciting, and apply those strategies to their own writing.

My job as a seventh grade teacher is to help my students fall in love with reading and writing.

Some kids haven't found that "first book" that grabs them, but it just takes one to unlock a lifelong love of reading. Some kids have never written much more than a page or two at a time, but during novel month they will need to have inspiration every day to make their word count. A great model novel they read with their fellow writers can help them keep going when the going gets tough.
