I am a second-year school counselor in a small rural school. Our school has a high poverty population and serves students in grades 3k-5. I teach social emotional, academic, and career readiness skills in grades 4k-5 on a biweekly schedule, along with meeting student needs through group and individual counseling.
If I had to describe our student population in five words they would be: curious, caring, creative, energetic, and humorous.
Our students bring joy to my life and others.
My Project
Having multiple copies of books that relate to real life issues our students are facing will help to lead conversations in a non-judgmental way with a group of their peers. Topics being discussed will aid in conversations of students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade during small group book clubs.
Books are a great way to open up the quiet student who does not want to talk about a concerning issue.
Being able to transfer the conversation onto the characters in the story, while contemplating our current situations helps them open up. Multiple copies of books will be used for small group book club members, while individual books will be used with younger students in a variety of ways: 1:1, small group, guidance lessons.
