Students are no different than adults in that they would love to be able to choose what they read. I would love to be able to provide more choice in our book clubs and these books are just the ticket to add to my library.
My delightful 5th graders come from various cultural and social economic backgrounds.
Some have a plethora of books at home while others have little to none. Reading is the foundation of our classroom. Each year students come with a wide variety of preferred genres and reading abilities and I strive to meet their needs everyday. We have book clubs and book talks and do everything we can to make reading fun and engaging. I see it as a personal challenge when a student enters my classroom claiming not to like reading. There is a book for everyone - we just need to find it!
My Project
There are two ways these books will be used in my classroom. Some of the books will be used for independent reading. Weird and Wacky School days is a proven favorite for boys who struggle to find a book they can read and enjoy. Other books will be used for book clubs; a favorite activity for my students. We gather at the guided reading table to ask each other questions, increase comprehension, and encourage further reading.
Students will have more variety of books to read during independent reading and book clubs.
Most teachers agree that choice is everything in promoting reading engagement. Reading engagement results in increased comprehension. I want to do everything I can to assure my students leave my classroom prepared for a literate future.
