Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our district are often reading below grade level. It is important to find high interest, lower level texts for my students.
These books will create an excitement around reading and the students will get to practice critical skills (fluency, comprehension, and other reading strategies).
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. Books are so important to my students and are truly valued. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school for high-quality books. There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in our school.
My Project
It can be challenging to find a book that will appeal to a student who reads at a first grade level and is much older. High interest/low reading level books can motivate struggling readers by providing books on topics that their peers are reading, but targeted toward their reading level.
High/low books can help build reading fluency, vocabulary, background knowledge and interest in reading.
Effective high/low books provide supports for struggling readers, including illustrations to support the text, carefully chosen vocabulary, simple sentences, compelling stories, and characters that interest the reader.
The very best high/low books materials provide these supports invisibly, so that young readers don't feel that they are reading "books for babies."
