Book Bonanza: Hooking Students with High Interest Books!
My students need high interest books across a variety of reading levels to get them invigorated about reading in school and at home. Research demonstrates that the volume of reading matters, so let's hook them!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our 5th grade ICT classroom has 20 students with a substantial amount of students receiving special education services. They are a part of the Lower East Side community, one which is vibrant and diverse. Many of our students speak Spanish and come from immigrant families. The majority of our students are living in poverty and especially need access to technology and quality resources to be successful in school and beyond.
They are curious and excited learners!
They are children who are so deserving of your donations.
My Project
Our class needs a variety of leveled books from our lower level readers to our highest. At this time, our library needs some new titles to get all of our readers excited and engaged with reading. We especially need books for our readers below grade level, who seek high interest books that don't feel like they're "baby" books. They want to feel proud to carry around a book that looks exciting and interesting.
These titles have been selected, because they reach across genres in fiction.
I've selected many graphic novels, mysteries, action/adventure, and humorous books, so that all students can find books that can reach them. I've also selected multiple copies of many titles, so that they can read in partnerships and book clubs. Students love to read together and that peer encouragement can be what it takes to push a reluctant reader into an avid one. Every day we spend at least 30 minutes where the students read independently, while my coteacher and I will conference with individuals, providing them with personal reading jobs based on their needs. Our lower level readers will love checking out MineCraft Diaries or Magic Tree House, and I suspect many of our fantasy lovers won't be able to put down the Amulet Series. Each of these books will connect with different readers in our classroom and get them excited about what awaits them in each bin.
