This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is in a high poverty area. Most of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. I see my students wanting to succeed but the odds are stacked against them. They have limited opportunities for exposure to technology, the arts, performances, museums and other enrichment activities because their families can't afford it. I feel very passionate about giving them equal opportunities for access to education. Part of my job is to find ways to foster and develop a love for learning that will uplift them throughout their lives. As a teacher with almost fifteen years of experience under my belt, I have learned that my students need many interventions. But above all, they need to fall in love with learning during their primary years. That is why I feel the urgency to find ways to enrich my classroom and fulfill my students' needs.

My Project

My students are getting so good at reading that my classroom library is becoming obsolete! The community I work with lacks the economic resources to purchase a lot of the basics necessities we take for granted. A book is definitely a basic item! That is why my classroom library is a great resource. My students borrow books we have read during a guided reading lesson and practice their reading skills at home.

My book lending system is very effective but with two groups of 26 students I am running out of books.

My students need books at their level to read at home.
