Our school is nestled in the heart of Indiana, in a small rural town that is always striving to do what's best for kids with unique programing, challenging curriculum and developing life long learners who are student leaders in our school. We have a high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch in our school.
I currently have 20 first grade students who put their books in their desks loose.
Many times they get lost with all the other items in their desks, so having dedicated book bins would help us to be organized and be able to put the bin in their cubby so they know at all times where their books are. I want my kids in books no matter if their ability is needing to look at the pictures to tell a story, or reading chapter books with ease. Many kids don't have access to books at their levels at home, so in the classroom is a prime spot to get their nose in a book!
My Project
With these new books bins, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books in my classroom and constantly keep books on their level in their own sturdy bin that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level at any time of the day! They will also be able to choose books that interest them to put in their bins. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these book bins will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
