Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Research shows that children can make more independent reading choices when they are able to browse books by looking at the front cover rather than the spine of the book. Books that are front facing allow children, especially those that are not yet fluent readers, the ability to use context clues and images to discern what a book is about. Front facing books are also easier for little ones to look through, and put away when they are done with them.

Our library (the Burnett Beavers!)is transitioning to a front-facing book system to provide better support to our elementary-age readers.

We want our students to be more successful when making reading choices! To do so we need bins that books can be kept in that make the front of the book visible, and are easy for the students to flip through while browsing. Books that are placed spine-out on the shelf in the traditional way are often hard for a child to easy remove and put back neatly. It is also hard for a child to decide if they like a book, just by looking at the spine.

Please help us create a more student-centered library for our campus!
