This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to be the teacher of a wonderful group of eager-to-learn first graders at an inner city Title 1 school in Los Angeles. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are also learning English as a second language. Despite the adverse area they live in, my students come to school every day wanting to learn and work hard. I want them to have the opportunities and resources that are necessary to help them achieve whatever dream they have for themselves.

My students LOVE to read!

They are excited when it's time for their independent reading time and Reader's Workshop so they can practice what they are learning and showcase their skills. They enjoy choosing books that are interesting to them and that will challenge them to become better readers. There is nothing better than sitting with a good book and being able to enjoy and focus on it in a calm environment.

My Project

My students do not have a way to get to the books they love to read in a manageable way. Also, the students' metal-legged chairs moving in any manner on our classroom's wooden floors are very noisy and are a big distraction to reading and any other task.

My students need individual book bins to store books and reading materials they are practicing.

These bins will provide an easier way to access their books during independent reading as well as any other opportunity to read. The chair foot glides will provide a peaceful environment in which to read and transition smoothly.
