My students with autism show an enthusiasm for reading that I am thrilled to encounter. I teach six smart, funny, fun 4th and 5th grade students from all over Brooklyn who read on very different levels. One thing they can all agree on is that they like to read!
Although we read plenty of standard texts in our classroom, my students gravitate to the adapted books that I download and print out from the New York City District 75 website for special needs students. These books are simple, repetitive, and feature themes and pictures that relate to my students' everyday lives. (One of their favorites is "There's So Much to See in New York City!" by Jessica Kratzer.) They are books they can read themselves and they love the independence this grants them.
In order to preserve these books, our class would benefit greatly from a book binding machine and spines to bind the books. The adapted books my students currently read are held together by binder clips. Everyday handling leaves the pages scattered and out of order. A book binding machine would secure the books my students already know and love, making them more accessible, and allow me to print more adapted books to add to our classroom library.
Your help will ensure that my students have access to motivating, relevant reading material at their level. Please consider contributing to the purchase of a book binding machine in order to help my students read more, read more fluently, and read more enthusiastically! Thank you.
