My Students
I have moved this year from teaching second grade to third grade--and I am so lucky to be teaching and working with many of my same students again, as well as getting to know some new smiling faces! They are a diverse group of kids who had an unusual and late start to the school year due to Hurricane Harvey. We have lost 12 school days due to the weather this year, so not a minute more can be wasted! I try to keep every minute focused on high impact, quality learning experiences that will help us move forward despite the large amount of time lost in this unusual year. And no matter what has gone on around us, my students continue to work hard and express joy and enthusiasm for learning.
My Project
My students will select which books they want to read and be placed on a team. They will select a team name and decorate posters to get excited about the event. Then they will each have several weeks to read their books and discuss them with their team. Finally, we will host a Book Battle - a quiz show type of event where students answer questions about their novels to win prizes (more books) and bragging rights! The event will be held towards the end of the year to help keep my students excited about learning even when their minds would normally start to wander. The book prizes will also serve another purpose- giving my students(many of whom lost all of their previous personal books in Hurricane Harvey) something to read over the summer.
