I am very passionate about teaching and my students are the best students in the world. Unfortunately they do not always get what they deserve due to lack of resources. My school is Title 1 and has a high percentage of students who are living in poverty or don't speak English as a first language. We work hard with what we have, but often aren't afforded the same opportunities as other schools in the district.
Many students come to school without school supplies at the beginning of the year.
Our parents are dedicated and give what they can when they can. The students have an excitement for learning and strive for success in everything they do. They take pride in their work and work miracles with what they have.
This coming school year (2018-2019) will be our thrid year competing in Battle of the Books. The staff and students are excited about the opportunity to compete again. Students will challenge themselves to independently read each title and prepare questions to share with their teammates. Providing the students with the necessary tools will open the doors to this competition to a greater extent. Having our school's library own these books will allow our students greater access to the titles necessary to participate in the local and regional Battle of the Books competitions.
Students who are excited about reading tend to read more books which in turn leads to stronger vocabulary and a deeper understanding of the world we live in.
Stronger readers make better writers and thinkers. The students were so excited to participate in this program last year and are anxiously awaiting next year. With your generosity, we will have the titles needed to allow our students the opportunity to participate in this academic event again.
