My third grade students live in a low income community.
Their parents are hard working and want the best for their children, however, their families lack money, time, and resources to support their children. Reading is the most important skill that students need to master to ensure success. They attend an amazing school that sets high standards and expectations to ensure that students graduate from high school and pursue higher education.
My Project
My students are wonderful, intelligent, creative students whom are eager to learn. They LOVE reading and are required to read every night but do not have access to books at home. My students will learn accountability by having to return a book everyday to school. They will learn to read chapter books from beginning to end, they will have something to do at home besides watching TV or playing video games. My students will have the opportunity to get lost in a book.
My students have been an active part in this DonorsChoose process.
I have only ordered books that they are interested in, that are on their level, and that they have requested. If you donate you are giving a child the opportunity to bring a book home that they can read at night and then return the next day to continue reading. The love of reading is contagious. If these students learn to love reading at a young age they will have a better chance for success later on.
