Boogie Boards to Break Reading Barriers!

My Students

Every day I ask my students, "What's great about today?" I want them to know, that even in hard times we strive to look for the good in our days. I often use the quote by Grouch Marx- "I have just one day, today, and I am going to be happy in it!"

My students are amazing, but they are all struggling readers.

Many of them are not happy to be pulled out for reading intervention and so I want every possible trick in my bag to help them learn. No other classes in our school have Boogie Boards. I think that if the students could use them, rather than pencil and paper, for quick response and shared thinking, it would add some fun to their learning. Because many of the students struggle with their writing skills, responding on the Boogie Boards may help reduce frustration and reduce the stigma associated with receiving extra help.

My Project

My students that will be using the Boogie Boards are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who struggle in reading. The Boards will be used for quick response, cooperative learning, independent work, and small group intervention. Specific skills will include comparing and contrasting, categorizing, vocabulary review, etc.

This project will improve my classroom by giving my students a new and different way to demonstrate their learning.

It will put some fun into practicing reading skills and reduce the frustration levels that the students sometimes feel.
