My students are driven to learn through hands-on learning math labs and activities, which are carefully developed to increase their problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills, which enables them to work together to find solutions to real-world math problems.
My 6th-grade middle school students are curious and eager to learn about math concepts and how they relate to the world around them.
They begin the year a little timid and with little knowledge of 6th-grade math, but are quickly drawn into the power of learning through asking questions, sharing and collaborating with peers, and finding solutions. Frequently working with hands-on math equipment and supplies gives them the courage and ambition to explore the unknown and begin to think for themselves rather than just relying on books, formulas, and class discussions. They are learning how to be mathematicians, critical thinkers, and collaborators, and loving every minute of their time in math.
My Project
My students have unfinished learning that can seem overwhelming and out of reach due to absences or past online learning. However, with well designed, engaging and collaborative in-class activities combined with hands-on manipulatives and learning tools, students have the tools they need to succeed in math. The Boogie Board Blackboards are perfect for enticing students to effectively collaborate and fully engage in problem solving, reasoning and giving peer feedback in small groups and partner work. Students will be able to share their reasoning, make small notes and corrective feedback while critiquing not only their work, but the work of their partners or peers. The biggest impact the boards will have with our daily math activities is that they will increase the "fun" which directly increases student engagement. When students are fully engaged, their growth mindset and learning opportunities are greatly increased.
The Boogie Board Blackboards are the perfect size for hands-on partner and small group collaboration math tasks, and will greatly increase engagement to maximize learning opportunities.
These portable and reusable Boogie Boards offer the perfect learning tool for all my students to make-up unfinished learning and clear up common misunderstandings that often occur from "online" learning. These will be used by math lab intervention, regular and honors math class students.
In addition to the Boogie Boards, my students and I also need a magnetic whiteboard to use during small group instruction and intervention. The whiteboard is portable and magnetic which makes it possible for us to use magnetic math manipulatives while also having a math workspace that is easily visible to a small group of students. This whiteboard will be used to provide targeted interventions and extensions to meet every students individual needs and does not limit the instruction to just whole-class instruction from a wall whiteboard.
