My Students
One of my absolute favorite quotes is, "It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known but to question it" - Jacob Bronowski. To write is to wonder. Students need practice with words so they can fuel their learning desires.
I teach first grade for a new and upcoming charter school that's mission is to help every student reach his/her potential.
We believe strongly in differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of each learner. We offer a safe and secure place for education in a urban environment where bullying in elementary schools runs rampant. At my school students are encouraged to take a big responsibility for their own education by choosing to participate in all types of before and after school programs fitting to their individual interests. Unfortunately my school also lacks funding for technology and literacy. I aim to make the necessary changes in my classroom to gain greater access to 21st century tools that will enhance the opportunities for my students to succeed in the real world while mastering core content this year.
My Project
My goal for the Boogie Boards is to give access to real-world technology to my first graders that can enhance their phonics word construction, writer processing and mathematic problem solving strategies. Students will use the tablets for all of the following types of activities in the classroom and more: whole group phonics word construction, brainstorming writing topics and ideas, math guess and share, illustration of math equations, comparing numbers, counting, communication with teacher, and more.
Students are empowered through tools that open new ways for them to gain and share and experience knowledge.
Engagement is also a BIG bonus for introducing new technologies into the classroom. My students are going to LOVE the Boogie Boards and be more eager to share their ideas and creativity. The Boogie Boards will also decrease our paper usage and the expense of white boards and markers that dry out all to often, add clutter to the classroom, stain clothes and dirty hands.
