My Students

The Bonsai tree represents harmony, patience and tranquility.

The 6th graders I work with are excitable, eager students.

They are very involved in extra-curricular activities and are fortunate enough to have many (often too many) electronics. Unfortunately, they do not often have or make the time to slow down, relax and reflect.

My Project

As a class project, I hope to engage students with the trees. They will learn to sketch, plan and prune their trees. They will work with a partner to foster a sense of harmony, and write about the process. This project builds on the science curriculum of learning the life cycle of plants and will also be used to explore ecology, abiotic factors and discussion of ecosystems.

This project will expose kids to a skill set of agriculture often neglected, and will truly allow us to integrate the arts with science and environmental education.

Growing and attending to the trees will really make students slow down and learn patience.
