My students need BOOKS! They need books that will not only boost their reading and writing skills but that will also assist them in recognizing and regulating their feelings!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students are Special Education students who lack social and emotional skills. Many are autistic or have behavioral and mental health diagnoses.
A majority of my students are part of a vulnerable population and suffer from homelessness, mental health issues, domestic violence and are also in and out of foster homes.
My school provides them with a safe haven where they can express their wants and needs not only through classwork but also through counseling.
We love and support our children.
My Project
My students will use these books to have something they can read about that they can relate to. I am trying to create a library full of books that support positive self-esteem, character education, social and emotional skills. I have requested these books and also a bookcase and storage to place the books in so the children can see the books displayed and have someplace to look through that will be organized based on the subject of the book. I have also requested coloring books for mindfulness activities, and sheet protectors to protect book covers.
It is important to build on reading and writing skills while also reintroducing feelings and emotions to the students.
If students are able to read books that are more similar to what they are feeling and going through they will be more interested in reading because they will know there are more stories for them to relate with and they will be more interested in writing because they will begin to want to write their own stories.
This is the beginning for these students. When the spark is lit they will succeed.
