San Francisco, a city filled with history, lore, and diversity, is the focus of our Social Studies unit for our third grade students. Most of our students are English Language Learners and recent immigrants. More than 65% of our students receive free or reduced lunch through S.F.U.S.D. To make the City come alive for them, we take field trips. For the Days of the Dead, we took our students to the Mission District. After our students visited the Haas-Lilienthal House, they drew Victorian houses. The students went on a tour of City Hall after studying the San Francisco City Government, using both the print medium and the Internet. For the Chinatown tour, we the teachers, became the tour guides. Through the year's study of the City, the students are creating their own books: "All About San Francisco from A to Z". For the culminating event to our year of intense study, we would like to take our students on the Bay Cruise Adventure, offered by the Blue and Gold Fleet. This would be a first time experience for our students in which they would see from the Bay, the City which they've studied for this entire school year. It would be a wonderful opportunity for them to review with each other the interesting information they learned about the City while cruising ON the S.F.Bay. Thank you so much for helping our students have this once in a lifetime experience.
