Body, Energy, Space, and Time of Dance

My Students

I teach a population of over 1,000 students, ages 3-13 (preK-8) with many diverse learning styles. In a typical week of dance instruction, students look forward to the interaction of movement and creativity. During dance class, students move freely, explore pathways, create spatial designs and body shapes. They learn a variety of circle and line dances, creative movement, specific techniques and genres of dance. They also learn to choreograph dances of their own, planning dynamic spatial designs and integrating elements of forms and tempo. An average class size is 30 students, so the space and variety of tools can reach all learning styles during a dance class.

My Project

My students need to be able to use the visual and tactile materials and props during dance. The polyspots provide a visual and tactile learner to develop spatial awareness and design. The ribbons and bands guide students to understand empty and positive space. The bands and ribbons enhance shape, energy qualities, and moving to a variety of tempos while dancing.

The polyspots, ribbons, and bands are essential teaching tools that all PreK-8th grade students can use.

Students will use the spots to create dynamic spaces during dance. They dance in circles, lines, and other dynamic pathways. Visual and kinesthetic learners, in particular, benefit from the strategy of using polyspots for understanding the importance of space in dance. The bands enhance shape making and understanding the dance element of empty space particularly for tactile learners, also. I know firsthand from researching best dance teaching methods that all three materilas will help me provide the best learning experiences for every student that I teach.
