Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an urban school district where my students come to school everyday already having faced many challenges. It is a diverse neighborhood and school, where 72% of the students' first language was not English and 67% are considered "high needs". But these are just the numbers. My kids are so much more than just numbers.

When given the opportunities, my students' abilities shine.

I have watched my English Language Learners fluently discuss simple machines and identify where the "fulcrum" is on a lever. I have watched students groan loudly in disappointment after I say reading time is over. I have watched students' eyes grow wide with amazement after telling them they could actually eat the vegetables we grew in the garden. My students have shown me that they can do everything and more than what we expect of them. It is my job to provide them with the chance.

Unfortunately, my students are not always given the chance due to lack of funds or resources. They have inspired me to work hard to provide the right opportunities and give them their chance to grow, wonder and create.

My Project

Inspired by the diversity of learners in my classroom, I know my students will also need a diverse array of exercise and focus equipment. These materials will provide my students with a variety of ways to improve their concentration and exercise habits. In the past, students have requested to sit on the floor or stand while working because they knew that's how they could concentrate best. The stability balls and balance pods in particular will amp up those learning and work positions. They will also improve balance and posture and provide fun workout opportunities between lessons.

My students are at times stressed and overwhelmed and need productive ways to refocus their minds and bodies.

Many of my students request breathing and yoga between lessons, while others request cardio. Now they will have the right materials to help them take brain breaks, have a positive relationship with movement and see the benefits exercise can have on their body and brain.

My students are a little bored of the usual "running and jumping in place for 20 seconds", and I'm ready to hear "Wow- balancing on the pods while I work really helps me focus!" and "Good thing I did some yoga, my mind is ready to work!".

It is my hope that these materials will help us create a healthy learning environment and that my students will carry these concentration and focus strategies with them and seek out healthy lives in the future.
