My Students
Do you remember the first book you read, that made you an avid reader? First impressions are very important. I want to create a great first impression of books, for my students, so they are able to appreciate and love quality books. The ultimate goal is turning them into life long readers.
I consider every child I taught art to, subbed for, and had for the year, to be my student.
I have eighteen curious four year-old students, in my pre-kindergarten class, and older ones who walk past my door, and wave hello, because I've made their day at some point. I also have future students who aren't old enough to be in school yet, but one day, they will. I teach and live in a tight community, where when I walk down the street, I will most likely bump into a family I know.
Most of the children come from immigrant families, who value education greatly. Our school is considered a high poverty school. Most are from households who have two hard working parents, who do their best to provide the best quality of life, for their children. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give their child the best, and I have no intentions of giving anything less.
My Project
Classic fairy tale stories, in these board books, are simplified to one word per page. Even with the limited text, pictures are worth a thousand words. Our English language learners will benefit immensely from these books. For the students just beginning to learn the language, the limited text will allow them to understand the story, without being bombarded with words. They will learn advanced vocabulary, since the author had to be very selective, with which words they used. Our advanced language learners will use the limited text to create their own words, for the story, as they will practice oral story telling.
The classic books that students usually read, in middle and high school, will be introduced in a much simplified version, and will expose our students to quality literature.
These are quality books I wish to expose to my students, to help them develop a love for reading. I truly believe children who read, grow up to be thinkers.
Your donations would greatly impact my students' enjoyment in reading.
Many of my students don't have the opportunity to visit the public library. Having books available, in our classroom library, will help develop and foster their love for reading. They will also allow students to learn life lessons, and other literacy skills--not to mention my students enjoy reading them! The books would greatly promote literacy in my classroom!
