Board Games to Teach Government and Civics

Help me give my students board games to teach government and civics, from the electoral college to the constitution to winning an election

My Project

Playing popular board games in my economics class was so successful that I wanted to request similar games for the Government/Civics portion of the course. What I enjoyed so much was watching students interact authentically with their peers and, as a result, they were naturally engaging with the content of the class. When students get to the end of their K-12 career, they become less willing to work with others if they don’t have the choice. In addition, they aren’t given many opportunities for free play anymore. This is where learning through board games comes into play. Board games teach social skills, patience, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Students learn to handle unpredictably which helps develop emotional resilience. They have to understand that setbacks can happen and that obstacles are imminent can help build a positive mindset and gain tools to handle adversity.

Now, more than ever, we need students to be well-informed civic-minded members of their community.

Students need to know it’s okay to disagree and have different opinions. Election Night! is a game that teaches U.S. state geography, and the mechanics of the Electoral College. Constitution Quest is great because it’s nonpartisan and beneficial for young, old, novice, or expert, citizens and those desiring to be so. The Monopoly House Divided board game is about U.S. Elections. You can buy states, earn votes, and take over the White House as the new president.

I want students to learn how the U.S. government is organized, what role they will play as individuals in this society, and learn how to work with and negotiate alongside their peers with different opinions. It is my hope that students will take what they learned through “game play” and apply it to real life.
