This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math to elementary students in a very high poverty school. My students come from very impoverished homes that do not have games for the children to play to reinforce math concepts and to get their minds thinking in more strategic and complex ways.
Many of my students come from families that spend their evenings working in the fields. The children do not have time to just play a game. For example, one of my students last year did not know that a regular 6-sided die had different numbers on it. He was one of the higher students in the class but he just did not have opportunities to explore the die. This is a basic example but a sad one. There are many math skills that can be reinforced by just playing board games.
The resources I need are the board games and puzzles I have selected. These games will provide opportunities for my students they otherwise wouldn't have. I know many of us grew up playing board games, my students do not have that luxury. I have asked my students many times if they have games to play at home with a parent or sibling. More often than not, they say, "No". I think this is a very depressing reality many of the students face in my school. With these games, I also plan on having a family game night. Families will be invited in to play games together. I believe this will have a very positive impact on everyone in the family. Just think of the conversations that will evolve around these games. Conversations that normally do not happen because no one can spare the time to just sit and talk. I can just see the smiles on the faces of these well-deserving children.
Your help will ensure that my students can see the value in board games and puzzles. Many math skills will come out with just playing the games and having conversations about the strategy others used. In high poverty schools the children are fighting to get their basic needs met. These games will give them joy in so many other ways as well. Thank you for your support. I would love to send you pictures of these smiling children while they are playing the games you helped support.
