Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are curious, creative, and capable of great things! All students at the school receive free breakfast, lunch, and snack. The student body is made up of children who are English language learners, Latino, African American, and Caucasian.
I teach third grade and on Thursday afternoons I volunteer to run a board game club for students in 2-5 grade.
These students have selected to spend their Thursday afternoons learning new games and acquiring a plethora of useful skills.
My Project
In this digital age our children are growing up in it's important for them to have access to board and card games that give them to opportunity to practice important life and academic skills. Through board game club and indoor recess my students get exposed to classic and new board games.
The games I've selected in this project all authentic applications of real world and academic skills in a fun environment.
Monopoly requires students to make change and use mental math strategies that we teach during the school day. Banagrams is a spectacular way to practice literacy skills and let children apply what they know about spelling patterns. Headbandz is especially beneficial for my English Language Learners. Set is a way to pre algebraic skills of set, attribute, and pattern work. These games will not only bring my students joy, they will allow them to practice important skills that will help them throughout their academic careers.
