In a world where tablets, phones, and game systems seem to be taking over, board games seem to be a thing of the past. While technology may support fine motor development, it lacks the social interaction, academic support, and off-screen engagement board games offer. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play simple board games such as memory or Candy Land. These classic favorites, many of us grew up playing.
The best thing about board games, is they are so much fun to play, students don't even realize they are learning.
Board games provide students with many critical skills they will need for the rest of their live. Board games teach students to take turns, manage their emotions, become good sports, and academic skills such as counting, one-to-one correspondence, colors, and shapes.
The games requested will go to support students social and academic development throughout the school year. Chutes & Ladders, Candy Land, and Eric Care Memory Match will be used during our Beginning of the Year Unit of Study to teach students how to take turns, colors, and one-to-one correspondence. The Memory Alphabet Match Game and The Five Little Monkeys Game will be used throughout all of our units of studies. The Insects & Bugs Memory Matching Game, Let's Feed the Very Hungry Caterpillar Counting Cards Game, The Ladybug Game, and Snug as a Bug board game will be used during our Insect Unit of Study to support counting, recognizing and recalling, and shapes. Pete the Care Groovy Buttons Game and Pete the Cat I Love My Buttons Game will be used during our clothing unit of study. And The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel and Hi Ho Cherry-O will used during our Tree Unit.
