My Project
Our school is always looking for new ways to engage students in after-school activities. We look for any chance to allow students to experience something new, socialize with friends and peers in a healthy way, and build positive connections with the school. Additionally, we want to bring families into the school community to make them a part of their student's learning.
My goal is to offer 6-8th grade students an after-school Board Game Club for about 6-8 weeks that concludes with a family event.
Each week, the students would learn to play a new board game, try new strategies, and practice techniques. At the end of the club, I want to invite families to join in playing the games together with their students. When they leave, they can select one of the games to take home and continue to play as a family.
There are countless benefits to learning to play board games. I started teaching board games as a math intervention tool for students to learn to follow rules and follow steps, to practice group work, and to find creative solutions within limitations. I continued to see benefits for students in other ways - being supportive, practicing healthy competition, engaging in productive struggle, and socializing with a variety of people.
My coworker brought this idea to me and I loved it. I love playing and teaching board games and am so excited about this new way to bring families into school.
