Help me give my students fun learning experiences through board games. Board games reinforce many learning concepts like reading, math, and spelling, but also support social learning. Learning how to be a good sport is important too.
I teach a second grade class of 18 students. This group absolutely loves reading and writing and pretty much anything we do. I find that when I teach them a skill, and tell them that they could try it using their own book, they just take off with it.
They are a very active group, so I've been hunting for fun, active, spelling, math, science and reading games and activities.
The students are always excited about hands on science activities and have had fun learning about plants, how rivers are formed, landforms and erosion. They also enjoy math, and playing in centers using legos, IQuest sets and place value blocks.
In my 24 years as a teacher in the community, there has been a big shift in the student population. We have some families that are financial comfortable, but an ever growing population of families in need and students with significant social and emotional needs. I hope you will consider helping out my second grade.
My Project
I love reinforcing math, spelling and reading concepts through board games. I often invite parent volunteers into the classroom for a Game Day to play board games with small groups of students. Parents who volunteer, often ask where they can purchase the game for home because the students enjoyed it so much.
The games I have chosen will support students' reading and phonics skills, buy answering questions and building words.
