My Students
My students are a great group of kids. They are 9th graders and many have autism and other developmental disabilities or special learning needs. They need more than a teacher who tells them what to do; they need an adult who will listen to them and work with them on their individual needs.
In the words of Temple Grandin, "Kids have to be exposed to different things to develop.
A child’s not going to find out he likes to play a musical instrument if you never exposed him to it."
My classroom assistant and I create a positive and interactive learning environment where our kids know that they are welcome, loved, appreciated, are safe, and can succeed.
My Project
I remember vividly playing games like Monopoly, Spades and Clue as a young teenager with my parents, some games lasting hours with my family. Today, most students play mobile games on their phones or on expensive consoles, learning more about hand-to-eye coordination than thinking skills. The player with the fastest fingers wins, not the one with the better strategy.
I want to teach young students the art of playing strategic games like chess, of learning how an opponent thinks, the sheer joy of competition, and the social interaction of games like Life or Risk.
These games are more than just fun. They can strengthen a young student's mind and give them memories that they can hold onto for the rest of their lives. Many games offer such a fun, interactive social element that can teach the introvert and the extrovert how to connect on a level that is real. I believe these games will have a substantial impact on our students in a positive way. These items, along with a bookshelf to store them on, will greatly help many students who need a safe space to socially interact after school hours.
