BMS Community Garden will be a collaboration between the science and counseling department to establish a community garden in raised garden beds outside of our school. Students will be involved in growing vegetables indoors during winter months. They will also be involved in establishing the vegetables, preparing the community garden site and maintaining it.
The community garden will be utilized as a hands-on learning experience for students and teachers.
Our school is in an urban community. Most of our students have not had the opportunity to experience step by step where our food comes from. This project will give them the opportunity to understand the work it takes to create and maintain a garden.
If we have a surplus of produce we will partner with community establishments such as our Bootstraps to donate the good grown to people in need.
The garden will advance diversity, equity and inclusion at BMS and in the community. The plants will be biologically diverse and allow for exploration of our student’s different cultures and differences. In its variety it will be a visual representation of the uniqueness of our community and how we can coexist and establish a community that thrives.
