Bluey and Peppa Pig Teach Early Literacy and Narrative Structure

Help me give my students access to student led early learning and literacy opportunities by providing them stories with familiar characters and the ability to act out the stories with figurines and settings from the story.

My Project

This project is to support early literacy skills for our special education preschool and kindergarten students. At this age it is important for activities to be child lead so that they can maintain interest. The books in this project have been selected based on what has been consistently popular with the majority of our students: Bluey and Peppa Pig. These are characters that our students love to play with but we have very few books that contain them. With this project we hope to give them access to a variety of books with these characters that they will want to continue to read again and again.

Children have stronger comprehension of a story and its problems when the characters and other factors like setting are familiar to them.

By focusing on reading books that are part of a series, such as the Bear Books by Karma Wilson, students will become familiar with the characters so that they can focus more on their actions and the events of the story.

Additionally we have requested toy sets with these same characters to support students in dramatic play when acting out events of the story. These extension activities will further support their comprehension of the events of the story while providing additional context for them to work on language. Comprehension of narrative structure provides a strong foundation for reading comprehension as students progress through phonics.
