I work with predominantly low-income students of color in central Ohio. Many come from immigrant families and even more will be the first in their family to earn a college degree. They are incredibly hard-working, brilliant, and funny. They inspire me to be the best teacher I can every day.
Many of them ride the bus hours each day across the city to be here and balance schoolwork with significant family and extracurricular responsibilities.
They demonstrate remarkable toughness, resourcefulness, and camaraderie. Their intelligence and integrity gives me great hope for our future.
My Project
My 9th grade students live only a couple hours from Toni Morrison's birthplace but have never read her classic works. In honor of Morrison's legacy, I am excited to lead my students through her legendary debut novel, The Bluest Eye. It is a powerful coming-of-age novel that touches on so many important issues--race, gender, trauma, and more. The book is an engaging, challenging read that will be perfect for growing my 9th grade scholars' skills.
Your donation will allow every single one of my students to read along with a copy of Morrison's brilliant debut novel.
They will close-read portions every day in class and then annotate with sticky notes each night for homework. They will be so excited to read along in these new books, and I will make sure to save these books for my students in future years.
