Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are growing daily as readers and leaders. Our school is a Title I school, which means we have a high percentage of students living in poverty. Even with the hardships they face, my students still arrive to school eager to learn and grow.
My students are eager readers - so much that I have to remind them to wait for book-talk time to share!
Many of their parents work multiple jobs to provide for their families and my students frequently care for younger siblings while their parents work. Our school is community focused and we frequently host subject-theme nights (Math Night was the latest hit) and cultural celebrations. My students and their families see education as a key to their success and I am honored to play a role in their journey.
My Project
In our reading classroom, we have daily reading time. Students are allowed to curl up or sprawl out with their current book of choice. Recently, they learned about the Texas Bluebonnet Award book nominees and are itching to read them.
A high percentage of my students do not have access to books at home, making our class library precious!
During reading time, I conference with each student about their current book and am constantly amazed by the depth of their insights and connections with books. We hold in-class book clubs so students get a chance to discuss their books with their peers. We're working on not interrupting others' reading time but it's hard because they love discussing what they're reading!
The books I'm requesting were selected by my students as the books they are most excited about reading next. Multiple copies will ensure that every child in the book club has their own copy to read in class.
