My Students

We are the blue planet but we are in danger of destroying the oceans and marine life. My students need to learn about water and the environment so they can protect it.

I teach in a school that is high poverty, over 60% are economically disadvantaged.

We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. Just in my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go during the school year. Many of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse. I need materials that all my students can access for our science units. That means I need materials on a wide range of reading levels. My school is not a Title One school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. Our district recently adopted CCSS, but our classroom library has no science nonfiction materials to teach about the environment. There is a creek near the playground and the ocean is about 3 miles away but most of my students have never thought of the implications of their behavior when they waste water or dump trash into the creek

My Project

I want to create a new unit to study water and the environment. Since we do not have money for field trips, I plan to use the DVDs like the Blue Planet: Seas of Life; National Geographic: Drain the Ocean; and Jean Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures to expand their understanding of the ocean. We will study marine life, water in general and oceans specifically. Next, I plan to use the requested biographies to have students study activists like Rachel Carson and J. Costeau. Students will gather facts and then create call to action posters. Finally, we will use the Death of a River Kit to study how they can become activists in their own backyard. My students struggle with reading and we have nothing that is appropriate and on grade level to read, and as a result they are currently not able to do reports or participate in class discussions. My students need a variety of books on different levels and some DVDs so that they can learn about the environment.

Your wonderful donation and help could make a world of difference to my students.

With your help my students would be able to read and learn about water and the environment. These books and DVDs will also improve their reading and communication skills. With your support, my students will have a chance to be successful and as a result, their self-image will improve. Please help my students.
