My Students

Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.

My English language learner students are resilient, resourceful and caring young teens.

Many of my students this year are recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto, but they also experience significant adjustment challenges. These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles.

My Project

This overnight camping trip has become a tradition for students in my classroom. This will be our third trip to Blue Jay Point Park, and students are talking about it already, even though the trip will not happen until the end of March.

It is amazing how much my students learn during these STEM activity packed two days spent fishing, hiking and camping in a nearby park.

With the fishing rods and tackle I am requesting and the help of NC Wildlife officials, we will learn to fish with a rod and reel. We will explore a small pond filled with turtles, tadpoles and lots of aquatic insects and then sketch these living creatures. on the blank Artist Trading Cards I am requesting. We will learn about the impact of dams on fish populations, particularly American Shad, and examine and create maps of the Neuse River Basin to share our understanding with others.

I can think of no other school or classroom activity that is as effective as this trip at combining STEM learning with art. We will be completing six different environmental science activities during our two-day trip. My students need your help to fund lodging and activity fees for an overnight stay in a beautiful and peaceful park, as well as fishing rods and an assortment of art supplies.
