Help me give my students magnifying glasses, books about carnivorous plants, ecology card games and puzzles, and other hands-on, environmental science supplies for their upcoming visit to a local park.
Twelve of my sixth grade English language learner students are planning for a hands-on learning adventure at a beautiful wooded park about an hour away from our school. We will be "camping" in a comfortable Lodge for three days, and we need some supplies to carry out an assortment of environmental science learning activities while we are visiting the site.
The magnifying glasses will be used while my students are hiking and making observations in their field journals about insects and plants along the way.
Laminated maps will provide a valuable reference as we learn about river basins, invasive species, and ecosystems within our state. A set of books about carnivorous plants will help students learn about a native North Carolina species before returning to school to care for live Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, and other insect-gobbling plants. Ecology card games will provide us with a backup activity in case of rain, and they will also support a relaxing quiet time in the evenings after we've eaten dinner, roasted marshmallows, and are settling down for the night. We will be taking a lot of things with us to use during our outside adventures; the zippered bags in different colors will help us organize and transport art and science supplies.
This trip provides real inquiry-based learning. Students will master new concepts and retain their understanding for a lifetime. Interacting with animals (and examining them closely with a magnifying glass) and locating water features on a map before standing next to them in real life will create vivid memories.
All of the items I am requesting will be used during our very busy three days of observing, experimenting, and learning outside in ways that are different from our typical classroom routine. We are so grateful for your support.
