My Students

My students often feel invisible. At the district level, people look at us as the country club of high schools, and that used to be true. Fifteen years ago, our free and reduced price lunch population was around 6%, but times have changed, and that number is now 54%. Because of the reputation of this school, our kids are often overlooked and their problems minimized.

People assume that our students have it good because they go to this school.

Some of them undoubtedly do, but some of them are facing a family with $12 in the bank, or parents in prison, or homelessness, or unsafe homes, or hunger which is often not seen by the outside.

At the personal level, my students are all in Honors English. Everyone assumes that they are so smart that they don't struggle in school and that school is easy for them. For many of them, that's really not the case. This makes it that much more rewarding when they work hard and get excited about their learning. I want my kids to feel like someone sees them, hears them, and cares about them when they walk into my room.

My Project

I would like a good, whole-room fan to help control the climate of my room. Our school was built in the 70s and was originally built to have open classrooms, so that's what the heating and cooling system was installed for. Everyone figured out fairly quickly that open classrooms weren't a good idea and had false walls put up.

Unfortunately, the heating and cooling system has never been updated to reflect these changes, so the climate in my room changes drastically from day to day.

I do not have a window, so I can't bring in any outside air to help. My room can range from 55 to 85 degrees on any given day, and often has little to no airflow which makes it very stuffy and muggy. This is hardly conducive to learning.

I currently have a small, round oscillating fan that I use to bring in air flow and cool air, but it simply isn't big enough or powerful enough to get the job done. I would love a better fan to make the room more comfortable and more conducive to learning. This would prevent me from having to move my classes out to a common area simply because our classroom is unbearable.
